Within the project management context, legacy benefit realisation is very important part of public sector involvement and investment since the late 1980s. Legacy is recognised as the long-term economic, tourism, social, and/or environmental outcomes for a host city from staging events, project and programmes (Gratton & Preuss, 2008; Hiller, 2003; Preuss, 2007). Mega Sporting Event such as Ryder Cup and Olympic Games therefore became projects. The Games is a great opportunity for benefit realisation for urban renewal, economic growth and infrastructural development. Despite the growing popularity, the concept of legacy has significantly changed the meaning for the planning, implementation and evaluation of sport event projects and programmes outcomes.
This study sought to evaluate the legacy realisation and management in Mega Projects and evaluate cultural benefits, infrastructure and economic development after the Olympics 2012. Specifically, this study aims:
This paper presents research of legacy realisation and management evaluated within the contemporary Great Britain and Russian Mega Sporting projects contexts. Analysed findings are presented in accordance with a rigorous sampling frame, different events are featured from 1980 to 2018 and data from interviews and questionnaires.
The paper concludes by suggesting further research surrounding the notion of legacy in project management context.
Mega sporting events are defined on the basis of their impact and complexity in organization and delivery. Further there are two characteristics of a mega event these are, internal and external. Internal characteristics include duration and scale of the sporting event sand external characteristics include level of internationalization, number of countries participating, tourism and media attention (J ones 2005). In term of expenditure also sporting events which require investments in terms of billions of dollars can be categorized as mega sporting events.
Organizing a sporting mega event is not an easy task and requires immaculate planning and strategies to be successfully organized. A well structured and defined approach is required to conduct them, thus the importance of project management increases in such events. Project management is defined as the planning, organizing, securing and managing resources to deliver on the stated goals and objectives (Myers 2009).
There are various approaches for the project management as well. For a sporting event project management is based on a risk based approach. In this in every phase and for every stakeholder it has to be clearly defined that ‘What can go wrong’ (Chalip 2004). For each and every component and stakeholder benefits and disadvantages are well defined in this approach. The stakeholders of a sporting mega event are government, regional government, local authorities, sports federations, sports officials, athletes, guests, visitors, sponsors, media, environment etc. And the major areas of concern on a sporting mega event are infrastructure, security, sports facilities, public transportation etc. All these stakeholders and concerned area are needed to be well defined in order to achieve success (Chalip 2000).
Another important area related to the sporting mega events is realizing legacy benefits which should be well defined even before the start of the project. Legacy benefits are defined as outcomes or impact of conducting an event on the host city, nation and its citizens (green 2003). These benefits could be in terms of improvement in infrastructure or improvement in sporting facilities in the city, increased tourism after the events are over, better public transportation facilities etc. On the basis of nature of scale and duration of these benefits they can be categorized into Short term and Long term (Permanent) benefits.
A sporting mega event has many legacy benefits, the short term includes increases number of tourists in the host city, international and national media attention which can significantly boost the reputation of the place, increased number of jobs in specific areas such as in tourism and hospitality sector and in infrastructure industry (O’Brien 2006). The long term or permanent legacy benefits of the event will be increased number of sporting facilities in the city, improvement in the infrastructure and public transportation system of the city, increased attention of citizens towards these sporting events, better security and management measures to be remained in the host city. All these legacy benefits need to well establish keeping in mind the needs and requirements of each and every stakeholder (O’Brien 2007).

Aim: The main aim of this research is identify and evaluate legacy benefits from a sporting mega-event project.
This research is mainly organized in the form of some sequential chapters. They are mainly developed in the form of sequential research activities which are accomplished in the following chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction It is the first chapter of the dissertation. This chapter includes discussion about the research subject and the background of the research subject. It helps in defining the research aims and objectives in order to assist readers in understanding of the research subject and the expectation of the research results.
Chapter 2: Literature Review – This is the second chapter of the dissertation. This chapter is mainly aimed to review the literatures in order to analyze and compare findings of various researchers on similar topics. The literature is mainly conducted with the exploration of the different literature sources including scholarly journal articles and textbooks and online articles. The literature review is mainly conducted in the form of detailed description of the research to provide support to the main outcomes of research in the form of evidences.
Chapter 3: Research Methodology – The research methodology is mainly discusses the different research methods. The primary research methods included in this dissertation are survey questionnaire method. The other research method used in the dissertation is the secondary research method, i.e. literature review method. The combined use of both these methods is quite effective to reach the results of research in an appropriate manner.
Chapter 4: Findings and Analysis – This chapter would explore the research data collected in the previous chapter in order to generate the major findings of the research study. The findings of the primary data are presented in the form of graphs and charts. On the other hand, the findings of the secondary data would be analyzed through qualitative data analysis in order to reach the research results in the most effective manner.
Chapter 5: Conclusion and Recommendations – In this chapter, outcomes of the research are represented in the form of the major conclusions of the research. In addition to this, some effective recommendations are also provided in relation to the research subject and for the future research study in order to make significant improvements in the research works conducted in the same field.
Chapter 6: Reflective Statement – In this chapter, the personal learning gained by me through the conductance of the research study are shared by me to provide what I have gained through this research project.
