Task 1

LO 1.1

Leadership and management are such acts which not only are extremely important for a company, but also they are a way through which employees can be motivated to give their best performance and remain loyal to the firm. They are not very different from one another, as there is a very thin line that separates them (Agha, 2001). On one hand, leadership is a way through which the employees can be motivated and inspired to give their best performance every time, while on the other, management is an act through which an eye can be kept on their conduct within organizational settings and be made to complete the tasks assigned to them efficiently and effectively. Though they have a very profound and extensive impact on workplace and behavior of the staff members, but still they are not left untouched by influence of other factors as well. Both of them to a great extent are affected by organizational goals and objectives, values and cultures as well. This means for management of a company to make these two effective and be able to yield the best results, it is important that they determine targets in such a manner that leadership and management of the company are not adversely affected (Davies, 2006).

Organizational goals and objectives to a great extent exert their influence on management and leadership activities. This can be supported through fact that the type of target that top authorities will determine leadership styles will have to be molded accordingly. It is very important to ensure that such technique are in perfect sync with that of strategies and goals, or else results can be very damaging and catastrophic to the company. Other than this, the organizational culture and values also play a very important role in leadership and management (Karp, 2013). The type of culture and structure adopted at the workplace along with values determine how leaders and managers will act and how they will make the employees to perform various tasks through which targets and aims can be attained with ease and comfort.

LO 1.2

It is a well known fact that leadership and management play a very critical role, because of reason that they largely determine how the employees will carry out their duties and roles. It is in this regard, that both of them are very important for the firm (John and Robson, 2009). Without such roles and skills, firm cannot attain its goals and objectives. For any business firm to survive in today’s market it is essential to make sure that they have such leaders and managers at the helm who can make employees to give their best performance and thus contribute in attainment of organizational goals and objectives. There are a lot of skills and abilities that the leaders and managers of today need to have, as it is a way through which they can make the employees to improve their performance as well as productivity (Rose, 2008). In this context one of the main talents that they need to possess is that of communication. It is a well known fact that communiqué is not only extremely important, but it is also one of the only ways through which it can be ensured that information is shared at the workplace. Interaction both with employees and management is a very effective way through which people can be led to give their best shot every time and thus also contribute in attainment of the goals and objectives.

Communication is the essence of a firm’s working as without, no task can be carried out, and thus targets cannot be attained with efficiency and effectiveness (Marc, 2012). Apart from being good communicators, leaders and managers are also required to motivate the employees on a regular basis. This is so because of reason that it is a way through which their productivity can be improved along with their loyalty and commitment to the workplace. In contemporary workplaces, it is a very critical component, mainly because it is a way through which workplace productivity can be improved (Berghman and Vloeberghs, 2003).

It is a well known fact that leadership and management are two very important factors or facets that must be considered by a company. This is so because of reason that it is the only way through which employees can be motivated to give their best performance and thus contribute to attainment of firm goals and objectives. Importance of leadership and management can better be understood through statement that they are the only sources through which not only commitment of the employees can be ensured, but their best performance as well (Nutley, 2008). Without such activities, company will not be able to fulfill its strategies with great efficiency and effectiveness and thus its survival can be put into danger.

There are a lot many skills and abilities that leaders and managers especially that of modern business places. One such talent is that of being able to communicate with both internal and external environment. For most corporations it is the only source through which they can be sure that information of the goals and objectives will be provided to employees and their grievances or problems will be known to top authorities (Benefield and Joseph, 2010). Further it is a well known fact that for organizational efficiency, communication is the key. Apart from interactive abilities, leaders and managers are also required to motivate the employees from time to time, so that they give their best performance and that they are efficient and effective as well.

There are a lot of areas that I need to develop in so that I can not only give a good performance, but also that I am able to contribute in an effective manner to company goals and targets. To be an effective leader, being able to manage stress and pressure is the key. By being able to handle stress and remaining calm, I can not only give the best performance but also ensure that it is as per firm’s quality standards.

Task 2

LO 2.1

While working for the company, there will be many opportunities and chances through which I can try to improve and develop the skills that I possess and also hone my leadership and management abilities. For employees of a company no matter in what industry it be operating, it is essential that they hold on to whatever opportunities that come their way, because of reason that they are only way through which they climb up in hierarchical structure of the firm (Fitzgerald and et. al, 2009). Most of companies, especially contemporary have realized this fact that to ensure that employees give their 100% while remaining loyal to it, they need to provided with such opportunities through which they can grow. If it is not done, then one thing can ensured that they will not be able to contribute in an effective manner to firm’s goals and objectives.

There can be a lot many opportunities and chances that I will encounter during my time in the company. But for me it will be essential that I cling on to them, as they will be the only way through which I can improve my productivity as well as performance and thus contribute to firm’s goals and targets. Some of such opportunities are:

  1. Workshops & Seminars: They are very effective source through which I can learn some or the other new thing which are prevalent in market. For me it will be critical that I attend such workshops and seminars, as it will be a chance through which I can interact with other professionals in the industry along with experts of the sector (Rock, 2010).
  2. Training and Development Sessions: These are another source(s) through which I can learn about developments in the industry and learn some or the other thing new. These can prove to be very beneficial for me, as through such sessions I will be able to improve my performance by a substantial margin and also get to know about efficient and effective ways through which I can carry out the tasks assigned to me in a very effective manner (Manning, 2013).

LO 2.2

Personal development plans are very much essential because of reason that they are the sources through which an individual can learn about the areas that need to be improved, so that performance and productivity can be improved. For companies it is also important that they help the employees in preparation of such plans (Cardno, 2005). It can be supported through fact that they are the way through which they can make a substantial contribution to attainment of targets given to them. For me, it will be essential that I develop my communication and cognitive abilities. The main reason behind the need for them to be developed is that I can work in such a manner through which optimum performance can be ensured.

Communication skills are those which enable an individual to interact with various parties that may be related to the work that he does (Houghton and et.al, 2004). It is one of those areas where I need to improve by a substantial margin, mainly because of reason that it is through this skill that I can talk to people, listen to them and share my views or opinions with them. So as to be able to improve this skill, I will need to attend various workshops and sessions on the topic. There are a lot many training, seminars and conferences organized on this skill. But just attending them will not be enough. I also will have to work on them on my own. I can firstly practice in front of mirror and then slowly start to talk to people on a variety of subjects. This can help me by a great margin in improving my communication skills. Apart from this, I will also have to develop my cognitive or thinking skills. They are important from view point as they are useful in arranging the thoughts in a sequential manner and be able to present them in a logical manner (Sullivan, 2002). To improve them, I will need reduce the stress levels and start to solve different kinds of puzzles.

LO 2.3

After developing the personal development plan, I will need to start to implement. It is very important because of reason that it only after this stage it can be seen whether as to the developed plan has been useful to an individual (Cassidy, 2006). In this regard, the plan that I have developed states that I will need to work on my communication and cognitive skills. This is the implementation stage and the one where I will need to start to apply the plan in real life.

First of all I will need to start going to and attending the various workshops, training sessions and seminars on communication skills. This may prove to be a very effective and useful way through which I can improve this ability. Such seminars and workshops though are very time consuming but are very much effective as well. Through them not only will I be able to develop this talent, but also build a network. Such sessions will help me and motivate me to interact with diverse people, listen to them, understand their point of view and also put forth my thinking. These kinds of sessions are very helpful in ensuring that an individual is able to develop his interactive abilities. Furthermore I will also have to work very hard, so that I can develop my cognitive abilities, i.e. how I think and present my views. This is a skill which is extremely important because of reason that it is the only way through which I can talk to people and make them understand my point of view.

Task 3

LO 3.1

My original objective was to develop communication and cognitive abilities, which to a great extent I was able to do. The plan that I had developed above helped a great deal in making sure that the original objective or reason behind preparing the plan is achieved. This plan stated that I will have to attend various workshops and seminars on communication skills. They are the only way through which I can try to bring any kind of improvement in it (Wakefield and et. al, 2007). My main motto of developing this plan was to improve my performance and working in such a manner that I can contribute in a positive manner to firm goals and objectives. It therefore may not be wrong to say that my intention has been very clear that I wanted to develop skills in a manner that I am of some great use to the company.

By implementing the plan, I was able to develop my communication skills by a great margin along with thinking and cognitive skills. Through such abilities I was able to improve my performance, and thus be able to ensure that goals and objectives are attained with ease and comfort. During the course of this plan, I could see great many changes in me, as I started to feel much more confident in talking to people and presenting them with my thoughts and opinions. Through this plan I have been able to achieve my main goal of being able to communicate with people freely and openly and also present them with my views and suggestions. The personal development plan created above largely has been very helpful in developing my skills.

LO 3.2

It is a well known fact that for employees of today’s workplace, it is very much important that they have some or the other kind of personal development plans, so that they can excel not only at the workplace, but also can lead a good life (Passerini, 2012). In this regard, it may not be wrong to say that it is a way through which an individual can improve his performance and time in the company. The development plan which I had prepared for myself was largely successful and very much helpful to me. This can be supported through fact that it was through this plan only that I was able to understand that both communication and cognitive skills are the ones which lack in me.

As per the plan, various workshops, seminars and training and development sessions will have to be attended, proved to be very effective. It was by attending them I could determine that being able to interact with people is one such skill which helps an individual to progress in personal and professional life. The plan has been very effective as it helped me by a great margin to improve my communication and cognitive skills. After attending the workshops and doing meditation and reducing stress, now I am able to think more clearly, along with arranging them in a much orderly manner, that I can present my thoughts and interact with many people. In comparison to the early days, today I feel much more confident in addressing a large number of crowds. It now has become a very easy task to do (Cox and et. al, 2007). Earlier there was a time when I could talk to many people all at once or give my opinions and thoughts; but after implementing the plan I can now do it with great ease and comfort. Though the plan largely has been very helpful to me, there are some more areas that I need to improve in.

LO 3.3

The personal development plan which was created above, has been very helpful to me in developing communication and cognitive skills by a great margin, but there are some other areas as well that I need to further improve in. Such development plans are very helpful in ensuring that my skills and abilities are upto date and that my organizational performance is also according to set standards (Freese and Samaras, 2006). Though many of skills have been developed through the plan, there are a lot more that I will have to improve in, so that performance can be made even better and that contribution can be made to attainment to organizational goals and objectives.

Some of the areas that I will need to improve in includes time and stress management. Since the workplace of today have become very competitive, it is also necessary to be able to manage the time that one has available and also be free from any kind of stress, tension and pressure. I will need to learn how time can be managed properly, as it is one of those areas on which my performance to a great extent is dependent on. To do so I will have to keep a notebook handy all the time, and record all the events that have happened, and what all I have to do further during the day. Through such a technique I will come to know what tasks more I will have to do. Also I will learn about time scheduling and time charts. Furthermore to manage the stress of job I can take power naps and brakes during the work.

Conclusion

Personal development is such an aspect which entails that an individual has to work in such a manner, so that his conduct and performance at the workplace can be improved by a great margin. Through such plans, one can contribute immensely to organizational goals and objectives. From the above study it can be concluded that there are a lot of areas that I need to improve in, such as communication skills, cognitive abilities along with time and stress management.
